Reminders From A Small Man

"You said normal girls were 'boring' But you were gone by the morning You kicked out the stage lights, But you're still performing And in plain sight you hid But you are what you did And I'll forget you, But I'll never forgive The smallest man who ever lived." - The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived by Taylor Swift, released on her album The Tortured Poets Department in 2024 For the last several years, a few people in my life have been telling me that - despite my insistence to stay single - they were sure that I would find someone when I least expected it. And I believed them. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame them for the story that is about to unfold. I know they said these words with love and good intention. And I love them for that. I only bring it up to explain the point I make later in this writing. Anyway... I was talking to someone awhile ago. Or I thought I was.  When we met, it was straight out of the movies. Our eyes met and there was an i...

Toxic Relationships, The Fear of Being Single & Realizing It's Okay to be Single

I can buy myself flowers Write my name in the sand Talk to myself for hours Say things you don't understand I can take myself dancing And I can hold my own hand Yeah, I can love me better than you can - Flowers by Miley Cyrus released on January 13, 2023 Truly a great song. Only a week old and it's already a favorite. There are many things to admire about Miley, but her music is right at the top of the list.  If anyone is looking for the definition of someone who has traveled to the edge and pulled themselves back - look no further than Miley Cyrus. The girl has been through so much and has come out stronger and braver than ever.  The song is a perfect look at her strength and determination. And a stunning anthem for singles everywhere.  Realistically, most humans just cannot stay single. We are, inherently, creatures of comfort. The need for love and connection burns through us like a raging fire. Just googling 'the human need for love' brings up article after art...

Love is patient. All you need is love. Love conquers all. What is love?

I hate the phrase 'Love conquers all' And I hate that it's true 'Cause I wanna not hate things  When I'm with you You love so many things And you have so much fun It makes me wish My hating days were done. - I Hate Everything But You from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4, as performed by Skylar Astin, Written by Rachel Bloom, Adam Schlesinger & Jack Dolgen I'll be honest - and if you've been following this blog at all, this will not come as a surprise - when Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was originally on, I only watched Season 4. And, yes, that was because Skylar came on. However, I have now seen all 4 seasons and it is a great show. And relatable if you have ever struggled with your mental health.  But to the song above, there is so much to love about this little song. Skylar's hilarious delivery and Rachel's genius lyrics, aside, of course.  It is the perfect definition of a paradox. And it works, brilliantly. In my opinion, the first line here is one of ...

Bad Choices, Heartbreak, and Choosing the Single Life

Say something, I'm giving up on you I'll be the one if you want me to. Anywhere, I would have followed you. Say something, I'm giving up on you. And I - I'm feeling so small It was over my head, I know nothing at all. And I will stumble and fall.  I'm still learning to love, just starting to crawl Say something, I'm giving up on you. I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you.  Anywhere, I would've followed you. Say something, I'm giving up on you.  - Performed by Skylar Astin as Max on Season 2 of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlists, originally by A Great Big World This is such a poignant song. And every time I listen to it, Skylar just breaks my heart. The pain in his voice is so real, that I cannot help but wonder what he was thinking about to get him in that place.  So why do I listen to the song so often, if it breaks me? Well, being in love with Skylar's voice, aside - the song just really hits something inside of me. Remember that conversat...
